Absolutely! I highly encourage participating in the program together. It not only fosters bonding but also enhances the learning experience. However, if your child prefers to do the program independently, that's perfectly fine too. They will need an adult partner to do some of the activities. I suggest checking in with them weekly to inquire about the latest challenge and discuss what they're discovering and learning along the way. It's all about supporting their journey towards growth and self-discovery.

Do I work through this workshop together with my tween?
What is the best age for this course?
This course is designed for all tweens and teens, starting as early as 5th grade until the end of high school.
Why did you create this course?
As a Professor of Practice (POP) at a Big 10 University, l've noticed a concerning trend among my students: a significant portion grapple with extreme anxiety, imposter syndrome, and a lack of self-confidence. For many, these challenges become so overwhelming that they find themselves unable to attend class, paralyzed by fear. It's designed with the understanding that the earlier they acquire these tools, the better prepared they'll be for life's challenges.
What if my tween has tried other methods without success?
Here's what a family counselor has to say about this program: As a family counselor, l'm always on the lookout for resources that can make a real difference in the lives of the young individuals I work with.
"Skip the Bad Songs" by Jen Landis has been a game-changer in my practice. One of the biggest challenges I face is engaging with tween and teen clients who have been resistant or downright "anti-counseling" in the past. It's not easy to break through their defenses and create a safe space for them to explore their emotions and challenges. However, Jen's book and program have proven to be an invaluable tool in overcoming this hurdle.
Jen's insights are not only relatable but also incredibly practical. The way she addresses the struggles and emotions that tweens and teens face is spot on. What truly sets this apart is its ability to speak directly to young individuals, bypassing the typical resistance they often have towards counseling.
I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact "Skip the Bad Songs" has had on young people. They connect with Jen's words on a profound level, often mentioning how they feel understood and supported. This connection has opened doors to deeper conversations around how they can meet their challenges more effectively. '
How long is the course?
The course is spread out into 10-weeks, one module per week.
However, each module is very manageable, even with a busy schedule. We recommend dedicating 15-30 minutes each week to get the most out of it. Sunday nights are perfect for this!
Are you a licensed counselor?
With over 30 years dedicated to studying the principles of growth mindset and the transformative power of positive thinking, l've navigated through years of trial and error to solidify the key strategies that lead to genuine happiness, irrespective of external circumstances.
However, it's essential to clarify that while I bring extensive personal expertise to the table, l am not a psychologist, medical doctor, or licensed healthcare professional. As such, I do not provide professional health or medical advice. If your child is grappling with any psychological or medical conditions, I strongly encourage you to seek assistance from a licensed and qualified health professional.
Is this course for boys or girls?
This course is designed to be inclusive of all youth, regardless of gender identity, expression, or how they may identify. I welcome boys, girls, non-binary individuals, transgender children, and anyone else who may identify with diverse gender identities or expressions.
Our family is so busy, how do we find time?
This course is entirely self-paced, meaning you can do it whenever it suits you! Pick the best time for your family and make sure to schedule it on the calendar every week.
